Hi Laura — My guess would be Chris Yeager — the very last house on Staats Road. If they are still around, let me know if you would like me to contact Chris or his wife and I’ll give them a call. Thanks! Roy

Oops– “Sighting Number” Not “Siting Number” — Darn homonyms anyway (though this misuse could be semantically justified, it was just plain sloppiness on my part to use the wrong homonym… 🙂 )

  • Attention: Cougar Encounter, Sunday, October 9th. A 60 pound pit/mastiff mix puppy about 7 years old was killed a few feet from our neighbors house on Staats Road. Cause of death was probably a skull puncture. No eye witnesses, but probable cougar kill. Washington Fish and Wildlife investigated but told me there had been no recent reports…[Read more]

Hi Sue and Duncan – I think a first step might be to invite a representative from the P.U.D. to discuss this at one of the Snowden Community meetings. I know someone who is conversant with the required technology who can probably provide technical assistance and who happily shares his expertise.

Here are a couple informational sites about…[Read more]

  • BPL — Broadband Over Power Lines. Is it time to consider kicking Century Link, Hughesnet, DISH, etc. to the curb by providing them some real and meaningful, publicly-owned competition?

Century Link has a completely lack-a-daisical and non-committal approach to adding DSL capability to their more remote and less densely populated areas — e.g.…[Read more]

    • I have read about rural communities as well as cities setting up their own grid in high use areas. As you suggested, the telecom industry has fought back. ALEC – the “lobbying” org for corporations has been active in writing state legislation that prevents communities and municipalities from establishing their own ISPs. Here’s an article from 2016…[Read more]

  • Our current Tree House Keepers will be moving in June and we’re looking for new renters/treehouse keepers. Perhaps you know someone who would like to live out Snowden way AND earn significant rent reductions. Please see our Ads on Gorge.net (Real Estate Residential for Rent) and/or Craigslist: https://portland.craigslist.org/grg/apa/6072262064.html

Correction: “causing the bees to use their ability to track and find food” should say “lose their ability”

Given that the WHO classified Roundup as a likely carcinogen in 2016 and the fact that no substance thus classified by the WHO has been subsequently removed from the list (in fact every one tested has proven to be carcinogenic) glyphosphate should certainly be strongly considered for banning.

Moreover, the health effects suffered by folks due…[Read more]

There are parts of 21st Century connectivity that are appealing — But, I don’t suppose I would have been any less naive about its potential for abuse this past year even with a better connection…

Those probably belong to Chris and Donna Yeager — last house on Staats Road. They used to roam quite a bit, but we hadn’t seen them for a while. If you see them again you can pm me and I’ll call either Chris or Donna to let them know. I’ll call them tomorrow so they’ll know their dogs have been out and about.

    • Thank you, Roy. I haven’t seen him since — it was just the male, I think, judging by size. I’ll let you know if he comes back.

Hi Reid — Do you know if there is any schematic/map for which houses are included in this phase? My understanding (though possibly incomplete or wrong…) is the telephone lines must be digitized and when that happens within X miles of a residence the residence can obtain DSL. We’re on Snowden and would dearly love to ditch the satellite……[Read more]

    • Hi Roy – I don’t know if there is a diagram, however I would really recommend going to the CL site and plugging in your address and see what happens. I did this a couple of months ago with ours and nothing was available, then yesterday I could order the 10Mbps broadband.

    • We know how you feel Roy. We would like to enter the 21st Century.

  • Anyone know if there is an online site which shows the status of plowing for secondary roads? Staats Road has not been plowed for three days which is quite unusual — And, way inconvenient!

  • Yeah — That’s pretty stupid. Wonder if the atver’s would be required to carry registration, proof of insurance, etc. since they’ll have to comply with motor vehicle laws. Would they have to comply with the […]

  • Hi — Caretaker needed for our Tree House 15 miles out Snowden. We rent our tree house as a romantic vacation escape and need someone to live on the property, care for the tree house and perform miscellaneous duties (Carpentry, Construction, Maintenance, for example) in exchange for reduced rent for our 2+ BR 1,000 square foot farmhouse.

Hughes is awful — and no better since being acquired by Comcast, either. Wonder when Century Link is going to digitize more phone lines out Snowden so we can ditch Hughes for good. Or, when the Fiber Optic cable which was installed two years ago is actually going to be put to use…

Apparently calling often is not enough either. Staats Road which is used by many people out Snowden to go to the BZ Corners Transfer Station has been sorely in need of not just regrading, but new base, gravel, and rolling ever since the timber companies destroyed it last year has had virtually no attention — it’s a mess. It’s been a mess and no…[Read more]

Hey Dawn — Loved the article. Nice bit of writing. Might disagree a little with what seems a bit of anthropomorphizing by Wielgus but really appreciate the challenge to convention that his work presents.

Personally, I think most cougar attacks are more about opportunity, risk, and evolution. A child or small adult present less risk and…[Read more]

    • Yes, Yes & yes. I figure at all times when walking about in the wilderness it is the food market of whose ever hungry & eats flesh. I walk in peace, but I walk alert. I especially like what you said about a “a sense of superiority and dominance over nature when in fact we are a part of rather than apart from the natural world.” Lovely.

    • Roy, you are very lucky if you have seen cougars in the wild 10 times! It’s difficult to see them unless you’re using dogs or the cougar is radio-collared. I agree that opportunity and risk are definitely factors in attacks on humans, but it’s my understanding that cougars are somewhat hard-wired for four-legged prey and attacking a human is…[Read more]
