  • I just had a solid light brown maybe palomino horse visit my house on tunnel. After rolling around in the snow for a bit it went back out on Tunnel. If you know who’s horse it might be please let them know its loose and in the Tunnel area near the gate to the Kreps trail/road. road.

    Duncan,

The website said 3 mbps for me too. When I called they were able to do 8. Depending on how much of a hurry you are in, it might be simer to wait for them to get the bates/tunnel box up. NI think i’ll need to work with them again once that happens.

  • Thought I would share an update on my situation with CenturyLink DSL service. I was able to order 8mbps service (not the 10mbps min we are supposed to get from this project). When talking with the tech, CL hasn’t turned on the Tunnel/Bates device just yet so I am actually being turned up on the old Bates device. When they finish the node they…[Read more]

    • Kyle,

Who/what number did you call? I am 1/3 of a mile from Tunnel on Bates Rd and when I check the CL online site I am told I can only get 3 mbps…. Is there a “special” CL number I should try? Thanks in advance.

I am with a small firm called Grange Insurance. I started with them when I was 16 with auto and just never changed even though am a few cities removed from where I grew up. They told me that ice dam damage is covered on the first phone call I had with them.

I am surprised to here that Farmer’s is fighting the claim. I believe every HO3 level…[Read more]

Sorry to here that. We are going through an ice dam claim. Was that what got you? Since they don’t seem to be treating you well want to share what company is trying to deny your claim?

    • Yep Ice dam and the downspout froze up, even with heat tape. Water backed up and got into the walls, ceiling and floor. partial damage to three rooms. Farmers Insurance in White Salmon, how about you?
When the snow melts (June??) I’m pulling the downspouts off the house and the section of gutter that failed me. I’ve had other gutters pulled off…[Read more]

    Hi Judy,

I have had good luck with a cell booster over on Tunnel. Without the booster I can only get calls out on the top floor of my house and little to no data. With it installed I have never lost a call anywhere in my house and I get reliable 4G LTE, usually test out around 15mbps on a speed test.

It is absolutely true that you need some…[Read more]

  • Hello Neighbors, we had some damage caused by ice this winter and will be needing the services of a contractor. If you have any service providers who you have had experience with who are trust worthy and does quality work, I would appreciate you passing along your recommendations.

    HI Kathy,

I was pushing pretty hard on the broadband topic last year and I ended up meeting some folks at the CenturyLink building in Seattle. This deployment is part of the CAF II funds which falls under their regulatory affairs director. This is just one of many CAF builds they are working on so I try to avoid over doing contact to the…[Read more]

    • 10mb/s is 10/8 MB/s. Or about one megabyte/second. The numbers phone companies give you are always in megabits. There are 8 megabits in a megabyte. They do that to make the numbers look bigger. They know most people see 10mb/s and think that means ten megabytes per second. That’d be nice, but it’s eight-fold far from the truth. I get 1MB/s…[Read more]

      • That’s pretty awesome bandwidth – didn’t realize satellite had that sort of throughput. My issue with satellite is the data cap which is very low, and the lack of VPN support for work. Otherwise I’d thought about getting it as a backup service, but I think I’m going to focus on trying to improve the LTE signal with an antenna and amplifier like…[Read more]

    Hi Reid,

Here is what I have heard from CentufyLink. As of Jan 11 they had 133 houses deployed of the 450 or so houses to be included in this project. They are deploying in phases. They have a phase called Bates Rd and Tunnel Rd mid node#1 that they estimate will be complete on Jan 31st. I’m not sure exactly what area is included in this.…[Read more]

    • Many thanks Kyle – this sounds promising.

      • For anyone interested in getting more involved in this issue, the next regional meeting of the Gorge Broadband Consortium will be Friday, February 10, at 10 a.m. in The Dalles. Exact location to be determined. The meeting will include updates on upcoming projects and legislation. For more information, contact Carrie Pipinich at the Mid-Columbia…[Read more]

        • Thanks! It appears as our address may have been enabled last week. I was at least able to place an order on the CL website this morning for 10Mbps DSL v2.

    • Hi Reid — Do you know if there is any schematic/map for which houses are included in this phase? My understanding (though possibly incomplete or wrong…) is the telephone lines must be digitized and when that happens within X miles of a residence the residence can obtain DSL. We’re on Snowden and would dearly love to ditch the satellite……[Read more]

      • Hi Roy – I don’t know if there is a diagram, however I would really recommend going to the CL site and plugging in your address and see what happens. I did this a couple of months ago with ours and nothing was available, then yesterday I could order the 10Mbps broadband.

      • We know how you feel Roy. We would like to enter the 21st Century.

        • There are parts of 21st Century connectivity that are appealing — But, I don’t suppose I would have been any less naive about its potential for abuse this past year even with a better connection…

    • Hi, Kyle: I just checked on the CL map and 858 Snowden has nothing available right now. Bummer. How did you hear about these phases? Do you have a contact number to get a bit more information? We have been working on this for several years and are pretty discouraged. Thanks for a bit of hope. Kathy & Jim 493-2246

      • Jim: According to CL the Acme/Snowden box upgrade should be completed by March. When we met with CL in August last year they told us that they were only upgrading as far as the Acme/Snowden. They also told us that the effective range of the DSL broadband service would only be 10,000 feet from the box–so you should be good at your place. I…[Read more]

    Hello Sue,

I passed on the information exactly as I received it so take this for what it is, but my interpretation is that you are correct. CenturyLinks new expanded DSL program will not be offered beyond where Acme road hits Snowden. CenturyLink is a “final mile” provider so there should not be large fees for connections to homes in the…[Read more]

Yes Scott, the 10 down 1 up is the standard the FCC attached to the CAF II funds. Not ideal but at least it is an option that shouldn’t have a cap (or at least have a very large cap). It should also have much better latency than satellite which will help with things like skype calls and games.

    • Yes, the satellite latency drives me crazy when moving lots of little files. Syncing website files with Dreamweaver, for example. It’s ridiculously slow. Skype works great, and Hughes.net offers voip that doesn’t count against the bandwidth quota. But since I work with Dreamweaver so much, I’m really eager for real broadband.

    • Before I switch over to Exede and sign a contract, I want to make sure I understand your information: when you say cut-off is Acme Road – do you mean they will not go up Snowden PAST Acme Road? And are they still talking about $1000s per household to bring up to the house?

      Thanks for the update!

    Hi Jennifer,

Welcome to Snowden! My wife and I purchased up here last summer so don’t have a lot experience just yet to share with you. We plowed and fenced our garden this spring and are in the process of gaining some of that growing experience in Snowden.
