We need to hire a crew to help us with some forest maintenance/fire hazard reduction. Anyone have recommendations?

    • Hi, Jenn:
In the fall 2015 we had Miguel Garcia and crew work here quite a few days on our 20-acre property. This was in conjunction with the DNR’s cost-sharing program (up to 50% reimbursement) “to promote forest health and fire suppression“. Our neighbor, Jesse Calkins (recently retired from the DNR), assisted us with the application and recommended Miguel’s crew (among a few others) for the work. They did a beautiful job of limbing trees, removing excess ones, clearing and stacking brush, etc. (As the DNR gave us two years to have the work completed, we elected to burn the slash piles ourselves in the ensuing favorable seasons.) Subsequently, we had the crew back here in 2016 to fell a few view-obscuring trees, and to spray the property. Contact information for “Brothers Garcia Forest and Lawn Care” can be found in the classifieds under “Services“. The latest entry for them was on Oct. 3. Good luck!

      • Jenn, I second that. Miguel and Brothers Garcia are good to work with, hard workers, and have good experience.

      • Marisa and Barbara,

Thanks for the recommendation. Jesse Caulkins had given us Miguels information as well, but we had trouble pinning him down. We have cost share funds as well. Given your recommendations we’ll double down on our efforts to get his attention!

        • I did try to reach him awhile back and got no return call, not sure what’s going on there. If you do get him, I’m sure he’ll be very reliable. Good luck!

    • Miguel and his crew are the hardest working most dependable people I’ve seen. I plan to bring them back to do some trail work. The number I have for him is 509-261-0646.

    • Hello! Just adding in to the ideas here: With Jesse Calkins’ retirement, Dan Lennon is the new contact for DNR cost-share in this area: Daniel Lennon at 509-773-5588 or He’s out of Goldendale but covering the west end of the County now.

And Underwood Conservation District has a free mobile chipping service starting up now through June while funds last! Using funding from DNR, this free chipping service (which is performed by Miguel Garcia as one of the two contractors) is available on a first-come, first-served basis in western Klickitat County and eastern Skamania County.
