  • Updated – White Salmon Valley Pool Metro Park District

Hello All – We attended the White Salmon Pool Committee meeting this week and obtained some more information about the pool that we wanted to share.

    1) The latest cost estimates for a new pool are $1.7 million to $1.9 million. The committee stated that they have private donation…[Read more]

    • Thanks very much for investing your time in research, reading and writing such detailed information. This has helped me make a decision.

Hi Sue – I submitted the same information to the editor at The Enterprise right after I posted it here. His response, while timely, was disappointing. He believes it is too early to talk about the cost of a new pool yet he does believe that a vote for the Park District is a vote for the new pool. I asked him why anyone should be expected to…[Read more]

  • White Salmon Valley Pool Park District and Property Tax Increase

We wanted to provide this community with some facts regarding the November 2018 ballots. We will all be voting Yes or No to create a new White Salmon Valley Pool Park District which will immediately be authorized to raise our property taxes by $0.25 per $1,000 of assessed value…[Read more]

    • Thank you for your efforts researching and putting together this information. I was supportive of a new pool which I thought was the purpose of the new district. I voted against the Mt Adams Park District because it was not specific enough and did not have a purpose or plan. It sounds like this new effort is similarly unfocused and that is…[Read more]

    • Thanks for the numbers, that’s absolutely nuts. $2800 per day to operate a pool?

    • I want to start out with a little list showing how the tax would increase over a 10 year period. It would take a really long time for this to reach the amount represented by $.75/$1K. This was hard for me to visualize but with a calculator I felt better. I am not completely sure of the numbers so any help is welcome. Also to raise it more…[Read more]

    • Here are thought on the points raised by Sharon & Steve. Thank you for your comments.
Point #1: Here is the inter-local agreement between the City of Seattle and the recently voted in Seattle Metropolitan Park District. There are provision within the agreement that address termination or ending of the agreement. This may also indicate that the…[Read more]

Kathy – I read the article. Is there any estimate on the amount of the levy expected?

Hello. We have also had a lot of problems with recent mail delivery – packages delivered to the wrong address, packages placed in a neighbor’s hold box at the post office, etc. Steve spoke to the postmaster twice about the problem and he was very helpful. While our delivery person is new to our route, he used to have a route in the Dalles so I…[Read more]

    • Yes, good suggestion about contacting the postmaster directly — James Hamilton. (He replaced Sue Gross last Aug. 10 [2017]. An article about it appeared in the Aug. 17 issue of The Enterprise.) R

Check with Judy Beckman for the name of the CL person that spoke to the Community Group last August. I believe she gave her card to Judy. I do know a number of people who have tried to call, but CL has no central place of contact. I just spoke to our neighbor at 968 Snowden and someone at CL said he could get 25mbs service! But when we were at…[Read more]

    • re: “And CL was only offering the max service of 10mbs down, 1mbs up which is the minimum required by the CAFII Federal Funding.” That’s pretty much what I get froom Hughes.net Gen 4. There is the monthly limit, but it is reliable. I’ve heard lots of nightmare stories from CL DSL customers that live near city center. I’m too far past Acme, so…[Read more]

    • We’re at the bottom of Bates – DSL. We only get 3mbs down and usually about 0.25 mbs up, but we stream movies, sometimes on two devices at a time without problems. The speed dips below 1.5 mbs and we get buffering issues. Uploading is sometimes painful, but still faster than the real speeds I used to get with satellite and there is no metering.…[Read more]

Be careful with filing homeowners insurance claims. Starting about 5 or 10 years ago the insurance industry developed and maintains a data base of all claims filed and paid. The use this data now when underwriting new policies or setting your annual rates. We had someone staying at our home that fell and broke an arm. We filed a claim and the…[Read more]

Duncan: I believe you are at 80 Bates Rd. You should be able to call CenturyLink customer service 877-862-9343 (or go online) and order internet services. Our friend lives at 37 Bates and got hooked up last December. Should be that straight-forward. Be forewarned, CL customer service is really bad. It took our friend 4 calls and 2 missed…[Read more]

Jim: According to CL the Acme/Snowden box upgrade should be completed by March. When we met with CL in August last year they told us that they were only upgrading as far as the Acme/Snowden. They also told us that the effective range of the DSL broadband service would only be 10,000 feet from the box–so you should be good at your place. I…[Read more]

Judy: We tried the booster alternative up at our place (986 Snowden) and found that it just did not work well. There are many articles out there on them, but bottom line a cell phone booster only works when you are already getting a consistent signal. At a minimum you would want at least 2 bars ALL THE TIME. The booster can not boost a non…[Read more]

Hello All, Steve and Sharon here (986 Snowden Rd). We wanted to add some further comments to the above regarding the continuing Broadband Saga. First, with regard to speeds. Note that Scott See is absolutely correct when he clarifies speeds in MBS vs speeds in Mbs–(Notice the big B, vs the small b in the description) A Byte–big B–equals 8…[Read more]

    • Thanks for all the info!! Our place is out Acme-no house there yet. But I did buy a cell phone booster meant for a car or truck that I use with a battery (the little antenna is on the cabin roof). It sure helps!! I go from text only capability to 3G if it’s plugged in-on Verizon. Just tossing it in there that a larger house size cell booster…[Read more]

      • I am surely interested in the cell phone booster idea. I see that some of the more powerful ones say that are meant for large square footage building …..or for RURAL REMOTE areas. Does anybody else have experience (especially on Bates Road) using such a booster. $800-$900 is a lot of money if it isn’t even going to work here. I’d love to know more!

        • Hi Judy,

I have had good luck with a cell booster over on Tunnel. Without the booster I can only get calls out on the top floor of my house and little to no data. With it installed I have never lost a call anywhere in my house and I get reliable 4G LTE, usually test out around 15mbps on a speed test.

It is absolutely true that you need some…[Read more]

        • Judy, I just (week ago) installed the weBoost Connect 4G. My service (AT&T) went from dropped calls always to dropped calls never and MUCH faster download on LTE. Best $549 I ever spent. It’s a little tedious to set up. You can drop by to see what my wife and I did if needed. Let me know if so.

  • Hi Judy: Just wanted to pass along the latest information I received from Saw.net this AM. She was apparently involved in getting Steve Heitmann hooked up earlier this year. She said that…[Read more]

Judy: that is really great news and valuable information. I did go back and look at the earlier minutes and note that one of the residents does in fact live just across the road from us on Snowden. Scott/Judy: I just completed calls to both Saw.net and Gorge.net. As Scott points out there currently is NO Fiber Optic service available in our area–and–neither Saw.net nor Gorge.net have anything in the planning pipeline. Reps of both companies said that the issue now is for making an economic case to bring the service up Snowden Rd–which…[Read more]

From them we learned how it was possible….that it did, indeed, happen…..and that they would work with Sawnet to get someone to come to this month’s meeting. Their presence at the December…[Read more]

Jim: Thanks for attending the meeting. I see by your comments that not much progress has been made in getting rural broadband to us “Up Snowden”. I got involved in the Broadband debate with MCEDD and Washington State back in late 2008. Surveys were done, yada, yada, etc. and no progress forward. They seemed to constantly focus on “speed”…[Read more]

    • Jim, the answer you got is the same thing I’ve been hearing for years: just keep pestering CenturyLink and others. But pleading to private corporations seems futile as long as their profit margins don’t pencil out for a scattered, hilly community like ours.

I have written a lot of letters and filled out surveys emphasizing the importance of…[Read more]

  • Saw the lost White Pyrenees dog today at 12pm today. He/she is near 545 Snowden. Did not know who to call about it.

    • I wanted to post this morning that our dogs ran away yesterday: Two pyrenese (white) male and female. We keep them close to home everyday but yesterday a strange dog was trying to get to our goats and my family released our dogs to protect the goats….they chased off the other dog and have not returned.

Went out this morning and tried to c…[Read more]
