About 12 miles up Snowden, just past the Sleepy Hollow Road turnoff. But that was on Friday. I’ve also seen the llama farther up Snowden, and have heard reports from people on Sleepy Hollow and Lyle-Snowden who have seen him (or her). I have a friend who already has a few other llamas and might be willing to take another one, and I also know…[Read more]

The big brown llama that some of us have seen roaming the neighborhood showed up in my front yard this morning. Anybody know who the owner is? My dog insisted on chasing him off our property, so watch out on Snowden Road please!

    • Dawn, about where was that llama?

    • Just a few days ago I saw someone fetching him with a trailer on Card Road. He’s been out and about for a while then.

  • We got an unannounced visit from two Forest Service employees around 7 p.m. a couple of night ago. They said they were “going around to all the neighbors,” passing out information about prescribed burns planned for this fall. Three of the burn areas are along Courtney Road, and a fourth is near Bristol. They are also planning some pile burning at…[Read more]

  • Did somebody hit a deer on Snowden Road on Friday night, in the northbound lane just past the turnoff for Sleepy Hollow Road? I found a lot of debris on the road the next morning: broken glass, a Japanese hydraulic gauge, a heavy metal base with telescoping poles, a few plastic parts. That curve is a spot where deer frequently cross the road.

You can buy directly from them at their farm? What hours? Do they sell meats? (Asking because we grow most of our own veggies.) I checked the website but it only has info about buying from them via a CSA or the White Salmon farmers’ market.

    • Hi Dawn: if you are looking for locally raised meat, check out Treebird Organics in Troutlake. They do a drop off at the old Solstice place in Bingen every other Friday. They sell pastured beef, pork, lamb and chicken. I have been buying from them for the last year and am quite happy with their meats.

    • Best to call first. And I’m pretty sure they don’t do meat. I bought direct at their farm and they didn’t seem put out at all. Awfully nice folks.

    • If you’re looking for Snowden meat, try https://www.facebook.com/RoughSwanRanch/ They’re right on Snowden Crusher Road. Call (541) 806-2718 Here’s a bit from their Facebook page “Our 21 acre farm is nestled between Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams just 12 miles NE of White Salmon, Washington. We raise pastured pork and poultry.

DNR update: Ground crews mopping up hot spots on #TunnelFire outside #WhiteSalmon after heavy air attack stopped spread at 15 acres. Thank you, firefighters!

    • I’m feeling very thankful I have a home tonight. Incredibly scary experience. Have some blackened foundation but didn’t lose a single structure.

      • Kyle, do you know what started it? We are so lucky to have the awesome all-volunteer Cherry Lane fire fighters and combined with DNR & WSFD it really was knocked down fast.

        • I have no idea what started it. It didn’t seem the investigator found much either or at least didn’t share with me. Very thankful for the response from the firefighters. When I came out of my house and saw fire sourounding me I thought we were losing the house for sure.

Also, here’s a page where people can offer or request help. For example, coordinating rescue of animals: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ColumbiaGorge.FireAssistance/about/

  • For information about this afternoon’s fire that on Tunnel Road, there are updates posted on this Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ColumbiaGorge.WildlandFireInfo/permalink/2137487623173804/ I hope everyone who had to evacuate is able to return home soon. Our thoughts are with you.

  • Anyone missing a male German Shepherd? We saw him on Snowden Rd near Wiley Pond about 30 minutes ago, trailing a long brown nylon leash but were not able to catch him

Just talked to Curtis. He has a llama of similar description but she hasn’t gone missing.

Probably the same big, brown llama I saw more than a week ago at the terminus of the Lyle-Snowden Rd. Maybe it belongs to Curtis Kinoo? I left him a phone message in case it’s his.

  • Anybody missing a large brown llama? I saw one yesterday near the intersection of Snowden/BillMoore and Lyle-Snowden Rd. It was heading south on Lyle-Snowden.

    • Hi, Dawn: Yes, we’ve occasionally seen wandering llamas on our property (three miles up Snowden Road) for the last few years. Most recently (about two months ago), caught two of them (one as you describe) on the trail-cam near the house. Hmmm, guess they know where home is? (But we ourselves haven’t yet figured out where that is!) Richard

Thanks, Judy! Where do we find those minutes? I don’t see anything posted on this website for 2017 except for the month of April (under Resources/Info>Snowden Council>Snowden Council Minutes) but maybe I’m looking in the wrong place. Or the minutes haven’t been approved and posted yet.

That’s correct, the daily smoke approval is only for burns over 99 tons, equivalent to about 50 piles measuring 10×10 feet. However, burning less than 99 tons still requires a permit, and does not absolve a landowner from the responsibility to burn in a way that protects neighbors’ health (i.e. when weather conditions are conducive to smoke…[Read more]

Be careful what you wish for. Faster truck traffic, more expensive road maintenance, and increased residential development often follow road improvements.

Here is where you can find DNR’s Daily Smoke Management Approvals for Large Burn Silvicultural Prescribed Fires (click on SE Region to see those for our area): https://fortress.wa.gov/dnr/protection/burnrequests/. The “N” indicates that approval was not given today (because weather conditions were not favorable for smoke dispersion), but I’m still…[Read more]

    • The DNR only has to give smoke approval if a landowner wants to burn over 99 tons of slash per harvest unit. Noone likes the controlled Burn smoke, understand that… But there’s food reason to reduce the log term fuel loading of our forests. Just look how much smoke and $ we’re consumed in the Eagle Creek fire. Also in WA and OR there are laws…[Read more]

We had outgoing mail stolen from our box years ago, including a check. Even though we noticed the theft immediately and put a stop-payment on the check, the thief was able to wash the check and use it at a Hood River gas station (where he was not required to show identification). Since then, we only mail checks or other sensitive information from…[Read more]

  • Did anyone else’s landline go dead the moment the power went out today? Makes me wonder whether CenturyLink forgot to change batteries in the box again.

    • Hi, Dawn: Currently at the library this (Saturday, Sept. 30) morning when the power went out also earlier here for a few minutes. But initially came here today because we (3 miles up Snowden Road) have not had land-line service (phone or internet) since YESTERDAY morning. Century-Link “promised” that it would be restored yesterday afternoon.…[Read more]
