Thanks to this bulletin board, we heard from a neighbor who wanted to sell some old bales to make way for new ones, so it was a perfect match.

  • Anybody know where I can buy a half-dozen bales of straw or hay? Old ones would be fine; to be used for mulch, not animal feed.

It probably doesn’t help that there’s a downed tree that juts out from the uphill side of the road on that stretch. There’s not much shoulder as it is.

  • Anybody know the owner of a brown boxer-type dog with wide blue collar that lives in the vicinity of Locke Hill (about 3 miles up Snowden)? I keep seeing him in the road there and nearly hit him once. One time I saw him in the company of a much smaller black-and-white dog who seemed a little more street-smart. But that stretch of road is not a…[Read more]

If you are meeting with a Weyerhaeuser rep, maybe ask them about all the Weyerhaeuser signs that have gone up around here in the past couple of years, saying that their land holdings are under “private recreation lease” and that anyone who does not have a written lease agreement will be prosecuted for trespassing. I understand landholder concerns…[Read more]

Scott, is the name Jaeger? A few years ago I returned a Great Pyrenees to them, and they had a number of others there. I don’t know the address or phone number but it’s near the end of the populated portion of Staats, with a “Jaeger’s Farm” sign at the entrance.

For anyone interested in getting more involved in this issue, the next regional meeting of the Gorge Broadband Consortium will be Friday, February 10, at 10 a.m. in The Dalles. Exact location to be determined. The meeting will include updates on upcoming projects and legislation. For more information, contact Carrie Pipinich at the Mid-Columbia…[Read more]

    • Thanks! It appears as our address may have been enabled last week. I was at least able to place an order on the CL website this morning for 10Mbps DSL v2.

Thanks to everyone for spreading the word. The red heeler “Sky” has been reunited with his owner. Merry Christmas!

P.S. He is still at our house. We found him hiding out in the barn this morning. Looks like a red heeler.

Anyone missing a dog? This one is an adult male, reddish-brown, looks like some sort of cattle dog, overweight, very friendly, no collar. We heard him crying in the night at 1208 Snowden. Please call 493-4428 if you know who the owner is.

Update: I just got an automated message from the Klickitat County emergency notification system saying that a large-scale land-line phone service outage began early Sunday morning, which caused intermittent service interruptions as well as a failure of the 911 network. “The problem stems from issues CenturyLink is having with network phone and…[Read more]

  • Anyone else having problems with their CenturyLink phone service? We are unable to make or receive calls (local or long-distance), and at least one of our neighbors here in upper Snowden has also been having trouble for the past couple of days. We get a dial tone but once we start dialing it turns to a busy tone. Sometimes there is no dial tone…[Read more]

Chuck, are you referring to Fisher Hill Road? When will it be closed?

A few other exit options from upper Snowden:
    1) Take Sleepy Hollow Road east to Appleton and then go down Canyon Road to Lyle, or continue on the Klickitat-Appleton Road to Klickitat and Goldendale.
    2) Take Sleepy Hollow east to the Lyle-Snowden Road and from there go south to…[Read more]

Welcome to the neighborhood, Jennifer! What’s your elevation? We are at ~2200′ and had three frosts in the past two weeks, so our pumpkins and squashes took a hit. The weather can be very unpredictable but we grow lots of root vegetables, greens, and berries along with the usual stuff like corn, beans, potatoes and tomatoes. It’s a lot easier…[Read more]

    • We are just under 2000′. Originally our plan was to do:
      1 acre cherries
      1 acre apples
      1 acre lavender
      3 acres of wine vines.
Given what we’ve heard and seen in the past 4 months, we’re thinking we might simplify to just lavender and wine vines. First order of business is water though, rainwater harvesting from the roof of our barn to start.…[Read more]

      • Chiming in on all the welcomes! I’m at about 2400′
& have cherries, pears, lots of berries…..but the birds & deer get most of them just before they ripen. I’m too lazy to fence them all in. There have been a couple garden tours up here via the Historical Society & Friends of WS Library as fundraisers, maybe it’s time for another (after you…[Read more]

Scott, I get the digest so I didn’t see your note until today. Several people from Snowden were at the meeting, and I expect that some of us will be at this Thursday’s Snowden Council meeting to update others on what we learned. There are a few recent developments that seem promising. One is that we see a potential way to exert pressure on…[Read more]

  • About that book we all got in the mail and its “urgent” message: It was written in 1858. (Clearly without the benefit of an editor.) And not updated since 1911.

  • Anybody missing a dog? A dog was on our front porch (1208 Snowden) around 4 a.m. last night but it ran away before we could get a good look. Our dogs were indoors at the time but may have frightened it with their barking. At a glance the visitor seemed to be medium size, longish black hair with some white and maybe also brown.

  • Anybody else experiencing terrible air quality (nasty-smelling smoke) today? There are no major scheduled burns for our area.

  • That is great news! Thank you to the Snowden Council for providing a public forum to learn more about this. I hope it will enable more people to get on the fiber. It sounds like we need to keep reminding these service providers about how many of us are running small businesses from our homes.

Where fiber is still not an option, I encourage anyone…[Read more]
